Biography

Jaromír Synek (* 1968) earned a Master’s degree in Music Education – Czech Language and Literature at the Faculty of Education of Palacký University in Olomouc. His diploma thesis was published as Te protivanovsky selke: Lidové písně a vyprávění z Protivanova [Te protivanovsky selke: Folk Songs and Stories from Protivanov] (1995). He completed a doctorate course in Music Theory and Education at the same university in 2008. In 1994–2001 he taught at primary and secondary schools in Olomouc. He has been tenured at the Department of Music Education of the Faculty of Education of Palacký University in Olomouc since 2001 as an Assistant Professor for the Didactics of Music Education. He is the author of the university textbooks and study aids Vybrané kapitoly z didaktiky hudební výchovy I [Selected Chapters from the Didactics of Music Education I] and Didaktika hudební výchovy I [The Didactics of Music Education I] (2004). Since 2001 he has also taught at and coordinated a programme for developing creativity though musical activities and for elementary composition called Slyšet jinak (Different Hearing). Within this programme, he has co-published Hudební nástroje jinak [Different Musical Instruments] (2013) with Gabriela Coufalová and Ivan Medek, Hudební hry jinak [Different Music Games] (2014) with Jiří Kopecký and Vít Zouhar, Composing in the Classroom (2014) with Ivan Medek and Vít Zouhar. Since 2013 he has been working on projects of the Czech Science Foundation that aim to publish the complete correspondence from Bohuslav Martinů to his family in Polička, first in electronic form in the Online Database of Sources of the Bohuslav Martinů Institute; he is currently working on preparing the third volume of letters for the print edition with Gabriela Všetičková/Žatková (Drazí I-V/Dear all. I-V). His research in this field has also led him to publish two studies in the music journal Opus musicum: “Stále se třískati hlavou do zdi…”.
