Biography

Prof. PaedDr. Jiří Luska, CSc. is  a professor of the Theory of Music and Education at the Department of Music at Palacký University in Olomouc. He focuses on music pedagogy, and psychology of music, and the issues of popular music theory and history with regards to the aspects of education, history, and religion. He takes part in seminars and conferences in the Czech Republic (Prague, Brno, Olomouc, Ostrava, Zlín, and Ústí nad Labem) and abroad in (Bristol, Banská Bystrica, Jyväskylä, Los Angeles, Munster, Nitra, Oxford, Paris, Sunderland,  Turčianské Teplice, Ubeda, Wien). He supervises Czech and foreign students in PhD study programme Music Theory and Education. His books and articles have been published in the journals in the Czech Republic and abroad. Palacký University Press in Olomouc published his books  The Perception and Cognition of Harmonic Patterns in Music (2012) and Mental processing of Western music harmony: some developmental and cognitive aspects (2017).
He has been a member of the Czech society of Music and of the International Society for Eighteenth-century Studies. He was a member of several university boards (The Faculty of Education of Palacký University, The Faculty of Physical Culture of Palacký University, and the Academic board of Palacký University). He is a member of the Academic board at the Faculty of Education of Matej Bela University in Banská Bystrica. He is the chairman of the board of the PhD program at the Faculty of Education at the University of Ostrava. He also was a member of the board of social science (GAČR) and the chairman of its sub-board for Art and Theory of Art. For a short time he was a member of the editorial board of the journal Hudební nástroje ('Musical Instruments'). He takes part in Academic boards issuing post-gradual and professorial degrees.
He was a University official for four terms (vice dean of the Faculty of Education of Palacký University, vice rector of Palacký University). He played an important role in the Bolognese process in the area of evaluation and restructuralisation of study programs and the implementation of ECTS at Palacký University and at the Faculty of Education of Palacký University in Olomouc. He took part in many grant projects (Tempus, project Magisthere - Leonardo da Vinci, Interdisciplinary research in Music culture - ESF, Creation of a networking system between the subjects of tertiary education, the non-profit sector, and the private sector - ESF a FRVŠ).
He studied Music at the Faculty of Education and the Czech language at the Philosophical Faculty of Palacký University in Olomouc for his PaedDr. (PhDr.). In 1991 he enrolled in the post-graduate program at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. In the same year his study of Reflection of Counter-Reformation trends in market-place songs published in the 18th century by printers in Moravia earned him the scholarship of Taylor's Institute of the University of Oxford for a month's scholarly stay at Wadham College in Oxford. In 1993 he defended his dissertation Vnímání harmonických hudebních celků, struktura harmonického sluchu a jeho diagnostika ('Perception of Harmonic Pieces, Structure of the Perception of Harmony and its Diagnostics') at Charles University in Prague. He was awarded the degree CSc. (Ph.D.) in 1994. In 1998 based on his Vývoj sluchu pro harmonii v ontogenezi ('Development of the Harmonic Ability in Ontogenesis') he was awarded the associate professor degree in the Theory of Music focused on Music Psychology.
He obtained the silver medal from the rector of Palacký University in Olomouc (2001) for his 50th anniversary. In 2006 he received a Commemorative medal of the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the Faculty of Education of Palacký University in Olomouc.
